Workism, Takeaways from Dr. Greg Pawilen, Canva Create 2023 and Lessons from Senior Academic Consultant Will Laschet

Dr. Laurie Santos' the Science of Well-Being class in Coursera made the pandemic bearable. I learned the beneficial happiness habits of being grateful, mindfulness, being in the moment, exercising and meditating.

So when I found out Dr. Laurie launched a Spotify podcast called the Happiness Lab, I instantly subscribed. One impactful episode was with Derek Thompson. He was a journalist at the Atlantic and author of several best-selliing books. He developed the concept of workism which essentially is about society putting careers and promotion on a pedestal. In a nutshell, workism says that our purpose on this earth is not just to produce economic value. Having many life containers which give our lives meaning, the more well-rounded we become.

Workism was really refreshing. A loud, smart voice shouting that it is okay if your working life is not an upward straight line is ok is assuring. Indeed, there are many anti-work sentiments and the pandemic has made us realize how we may turn passion into profit because work life is not ideal for everyone. The Great Resignation, remember?

Here are my main takeaways fromt the podcast:

  1. There are ways that you can invest in the other aspects of your life outside of work that could improve your quality of life.
  2. There are good enough job. Good enough jobs are jobs that allow you to be who you want to be. It provides a certain amount of salary while letting you to get off at a certain time so you can invest more in yourself, your relationships and your community. Once you have found a good enough job, turn your energy to other aspects that improve your well-being.
  3. What could you do aside from work? Play. Value of Play - gives self awareness, great way to serve as counter balance.
  4. Unless we define ourselves, our employer will happily define it for us. Find many sources of your identity.
  5. Our desks are never meant to be our altars.
  6. The work is not done but it is time to stop. We can stop.

Now ask yourself: what do I want to become after my 8-5 work gig?

Dr. Greg Pawilen

Had the privilege of joining a webinar on syllabi development conducted by UPLB educator Dr. Greg Pawilen. He was a lively presenter teeming with generous sharing of life lessons gleaned from his stellar teaching career.

Aside from valuable tips on how to develop syllabi, here are life lessons I gathered from Dr. Pawilen:

  • Life is not measured by your GWA or the awards that you receive.
  • Teaching is not a game. It is not a show. It is a lifetime experience that will influence the lives of students: whether they become better not bitter.
  • Important focus is for students to learn how to process.
  • Synchronous classes should not be used on reporting or lecturing. Adopt the flipped learning: address questions, discussion when synchronous.
  • Target students to be self-regulated, independent learners. Question student about their alternative understanding of what they learned.
  • You can collect data all day, but how are you using it to make your program better for your students?

Canva Create 2023

I have been using Canva since 2014-2015 yet it was my first time to join Canva's Create event. So glad to see Canva has evolved into a power tool that everybody uses. I remember talking about Canva possibly eating out of Adobe's market share in one of our Academic Councils. With more and more younger users more adept with Canva instead of Adobe products, the future is exciting.

Here are some notes from my online attendance of the event:

  • We all have our own life journeys. Be comfortable in your own skin.
  • Use words of kindness, wisdom and love at all times.
  • Do good in the world. It is a choice.
  • Era of you: Who are you?

National Geographic Learning Ready for Work: Conflict Management

Since working-from-home during the pandemic, I have been attending National Geographic's free webinars whenever my schedule allows it. In one of the most recent ones I have attended, the valuable lessons on communication are applicable not just in teaching but in any relationships. Sharing them here for you to think about too:

  • Conflict management tip: examine every type of issue for the best type of response to conflict.
  • Give in - when you've realized you are wrong and the issue is more important to them than you, or when the relationship is very important to you.
  • Avoid - when issue is small. Not the right time or place to talk or better to wait until everyone's calmer.
  • Compromise - no time for longer discussions or when you need a quick way to lower the negative feelings.
  • Work together - when you need everyone to commit to a solution, or when you need to build a long-term-relationship.
  • Force - when you need to stand up for yourself, when you've tried other ideas but they haven't worked, or you need a quick solution.

How to tell if a landline in NCR is PLDT, etc

Now that NCR-based landline has to have additional prefix digit so you may dial them, here's a cheat sheet whether to put 8, 7 or whatever based on the landline provider.

Open-ended questions, smart kids, traffic sensors, dream perspectives, PETA

Thanks Tito Danny! You will be missed.
Open-ended questions
Interviews encourage open-ended questions. They have the power to elicit deeper thinking and meaningful conversations. Parents are encouraged to ask open-ended questions to start family bonding.

One way we do this is through our daily roses and thorns. I found out about this from Pastor Herald Cruz who talked about parenting in my kids' school. He shared the Obama's roses and thorns which lets the kids share the best and worst part of their day. Every night, before we do our story time--we are in Book 10 of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events--kids have to share what was their most and least favorite parts of their days. Then we pray and give thanks for them.

My 8-year old boy never fails to give the answer: I am thankful for the computer. Day in and day out, believe me!
Our beloved pets: Sunny and Myeh!

Smart kids
We noticed that our 8-year old's best friends are the smartest kids in his class. We asked him and this was his answer:

I only befriend the smart kids at school because they are the only ones who understands.

Traffic sensors
Passing through an intersection, our 8-year old suggested to his dad that there should be traffic lights with sensors. So that when there are no cars on the other side, the green light for those with heavy traffic can still go on and drive.

Throwback photo of us fit girls trying to get slimmer
Dream perspectives
Our two kids were discussing their dreams last night. Couldn't hep but laugh when I overheard our 8-year old asking this:

Was your dream in 1st person or 3rd person?

Kids reaction to my blog
I told my kids that I keep a blog to house my journal of our experiences. I have been very forgetful, and the blog will remind us what those past years have been. I read to them several posts I found very funny. While I was already cracking up reading the first few lines, they were cringing.

Lenny Kravits
One of the early video games we let the kids play is Guitar/Music Hero. Most of the songs were rock classics, and not the usual pop songs the kids know. One of the songs included was Lenny Kravits' Are You Gonna Go My Way. So imagine our amusement when recently, we caught our 8-year old humming to that song.

A very sloppy picture without much thought about composition
Peta Theater's Art Zone
My friend and I recently attended a PETA parenting seminar. It was my first time to be at PETA Theater's building. They are located at the back of Quezon City Sports Club, near St. Lukes. Their building was impressive. I know that was a product of much labor and sacrifice. It felt chilling being within a structure build by the country's geniuses of theater and music. Yes, I was able to spy several theater greats like Kuya Bodjie Pascua, Direk Soxy Topacio, musician Noel Cabangon among others. It was great that there's a place like that where enthusiasts can hang out and be in the company of these wonderful, talented and accommodating stars.

PETA or Philippine Educational Theater Association started as a Martial Law protest group, if I remember it right. So imagine my surprise, finding about their other programs which include theater acting for kids, writing as well as storytelling. They have regular weekly offerings. How come I didn't know about this when we were still QC-based?

Kids' World Homeschooling

Looking for alternative education for my kid/s I finally entertain the thoughts of homeschooling. Here are some reasons to go homeschool:
  1. Parent has full control of kids' activities, lessons as well as topics to be learned
  2. Protection from bullying and other negative social influences (I would include here having crushes, bullying, eating habits)
  3. Ability to allow kids to focus on interest (kid wants trucks, parent may provide hands-on activity ala internship)
Kids World
Inquired about Kids World and here's what they offer according to Teacher Anne:
  • Php15k per student yearly tuition fee
  • Consultation with an academic adviser is at Php 600/hour
  • Satellite offices for consultation and testing are located in North Greenhills, Cubao, Banawe and Fairview

Aguinaldo International School Manila

A friend told me about Aguinaldo International School in Manila. She said a friend's kid goes there and mentioned to her of the very affordable tuition fee. She knows I may transfer my kid/s.

Aside from having a multi-culture exposure, sports include soccer and swimming. Mandarin is being offered along with other languages.

After a quick Google search, I landed on the home page of Aguinaldo International School. The website has a detail as to how much the yearly tuition fee for 2012-2013 was. I called to inquire about transferring kids and here's what I found out:

  • Incoming grade schooler needs to take a written exam
  • Papers required include clearance from previous school
  • Interview with the school principal
  • P10k off for early enrollment (P38,800 for Pre school, P58,500 for Grade School) and miscellaneous fees included already
  • Grade 1 schedule is 730am-230pm
  • Near UN Avenue LRT Station which gets flooded

Dr. Marc Reysio-Cruz of Capitol Medical City, Occupational Therapy in QC

Incredibooth time with the kids

Carlos' teacher told me that he may need a special education teacher since he has a hard time focusing and is hyperactive. A meeting with his teachers and the guidance counselor who evaluated him ended with a list of developmental pedia to consider.

I went with the nearest choice who was Dr. Reysio-Cruz. A parent-friend told me that he used to be a member of college-based organization Campus Crusade for Christ. Dr. Reysio-Cruz is also part of Headway School for Giftedness in Quezon City.

Developmental Pedia
It turns out that it's costly to consult with a dev-ped. A consultation ranged from P3,000 to P3,500 per session according to the Quezon City-based dev ped list given to me by his school. Their clinic's schedule is also very full. The earliest booking I got was three weeks after I called to be booked, only because I live near and the secretary's willing to put me in once a client backs out.

Fortunately, Carlos was seen two weeks after I asked for a schedule. One dev-ped clinic I called said their earliest vacancy is three months from the time I called.

However, when we got to the clinic of Dr. Reysio-Cruz, I was informed that he had an emergency meeting so another doctor will check Carlos. She was Dr. Jocelyn Sanchez of St. Luke's. She asked me questions about my pregnancy with Carlos along with his growing years. She would like to know the quirks I find about my little boy. I said he's more energetic compared with other boys and tends to focus on some tasks he prefers.

Diagnosing ADHD in 5-year olds
Aftewards, she had a one-on-one session with Carlos.
  1. She made him do some block creations after she has built them. I heard she asked Carlos to build a bridge.
  2. Then it was time to do physical activities, like standing on one foot for some seconds, hopping, throwing and catching a tennis ball.
  3. She asked Carlos to write.
  4. She also showed Carlos photos and asked him about what he saw. Carlos had to describe the activities, relationships of the people in the photo. He was also asked to name all that he can see there.
  5. She asked what Carlos' birthday was, where he lives, the name of his best friend. I would hear him answer confidently, but when the questions went to what he would do if he's tired or cold, his voice turned soft.
All the time, she was writing her notes.

Borderline ADHD with occupational therapy sessions
Aftewards, Carlos came out of the room and told me it was finish. I was called back in so she may explain her findings.

She said Carlos did well in the test though he would squirm in his place whether he was sitting or standing up. The little boy was in constant motion. She wanted to wait until he turns six years old when his brain reaches more development.

In the meantime, she suggests Carlos gets occupational therapy help in order to aid his schooling. Two to three times per week, she recommends. After three months of OT (occupational therapy) she would like to see him again, this time in her St. Lukes clinic.

Doctor also said she will email some recommendations for Carlos' school, which may include pairing Carlos with a role model, sitting him at the front.
