Mirrors

Whenever Lois and Carlos would play, it's usual to hear them arguing over a toy. One time, the fight got so intense they were both crying loudly. Carlos was holding on tightly to the iPod Touch they were using while Lois, perhaps in too much anger, went away with flailing arms and legs.

As their mom, I saw this as a chance to teach them about sharing. With booming voice and much authority I could muster, told them unless they both agree to share, I will confiscate their toy. Emphasized that as siblings they should be sharing everything. After some sobs, asked both the kids if they are ready to share.

Lois, in a soft voice admitted she will share with her brother. While Carlos adamantly insisted he won't. At this, Lois called on to her brother to say, "Sige ka, ikukulong ka ni Mommy sa kwarto kase di ka sanay mag-share." (Mommy will lock you up inside the room because you do not know how to share)

Yes, when it gets so nasty I bring Lois inside Carlos' room for some time out. I believe in disciplining the child, even to the point of spanking. Yet the way Lois talked about me sounded like I'm the SUPER antagonist. I never realized until that moment how serious I seem to our little angels' eyes.

Thank you Lois, for letting me see myself through your mirror. Will try to balance it by having more fun with you and Carlos, as Daddy Paul does.

Overheard

While Lois was playing with stuff toys Cookie Monster and Coralyn

Lois: I said no hitting! You want me to bring you up and lock you inside the room? Say sorry to Coralyn now. Pause.

Lois: You're not saying sorry. That's bad! Say sorry to Coralyn. Do you want your mommy to bring you upstairs?

I swear, both tone and manner of delivery, perfectly copied. I almost thought that was me giving out the sermon. Tsk, tsk, tsk!
